But when it came time to build our own home, we experienced first hand how difficult it is to get owner-builder financing or to find a builder that would build the house we wanted. We found that other “custom” home builders defined custom differently - they had a set of plans and we could make minor changes and choose finishes. Every change came at a steep cost. We knew what we wanted, and almost felt forced to settle for the homes these companies were building. We literally went back to the drawing board, worked with an architect and designed the house we wanted. After just six months of construction, we had our dream home.
